Letter from benefactor NRA member Bill Sustrich requesting support for Browns Canyon Wilderness designation from fellow Colorado NRA members

Dear Fellow NRA members:
In order to generate Congressional action for official designation of Browns Canyon as a wilderness area, we need the support of many NRA members who favor this program. Browns Canyon has been under study as a wilderness area for 27 years and has received recommendations from many government agencies, including USFS and BLM. Along with these, numerous outdoor oriented groups have endorsed this effort as viable and necessary.

This study was progressing well toward official wilderness designation until 2006 when several “Pro wheelers” protested to NRA headquarters that wilderness designation would degrade hunting and would exclude too many classes of hunters such as “very old, very young and infirm.” None of these “reasons” would survive close scrutiny among experienced and responsible hunters. With this misleading input and without first-hand knowledge of the area, the NRA voiced these concerns to our congressmen, effectively blocking any further progress for the time being.

Therefore, it now befalls on us, the rank and file NRA members, to collectively convince NRA headquarters to formally drop their objections to Browns Canyon Wilderness designation. What we need, in our own words, are letters of support for Browns Canyon Wilderness designation. Brief, straightforward statements will serve the purpose. The total numbers of responses will be just as important as the messages. Dozens of supporters will be noticeable, hundreds of supporters will have an undeniable impact.

If you wish, you can address your comments directly to NRA-ILA headquarters, attn: Darren LaSorte and Chris Cox, with copies to Representative Doug Lamborn, Senator Wayne Allard and Senator Ken Salazar. As an optional method, you can send your comments to me and I will make sure your responses reach those listed destinations.

Your help and your input is needed and will be appreciated by current and future sportsmen and outdoor recreationists.

Sincerely,
Bill Sustrich, NRA Benefactor Member
